Because I’ve worked with over 8,000 attorneys (and, as I tell my kids, have lived a long time), I recognize the number one indicator of success. And, as you might guess, I also recognize the number one indicator of failure, which, as you might guess, is the other side of that same coin.
The Inevitable Consequences of 100% Self Responsibility
100% self responsibility is the most important success principle in our solar system. Always start there. The attorneys I see go on to do big things, enjoy success, and feel happier are those who take 100% responsibility for, not only their actions, but where they are in their lives, careers, and entrepreneurial ventures.
Those will blame their ex, parents, an old boss, money, the economy, the government, taxes, or a previous partner are the ones whose progress is severely stifled. On the other hand, those who take 100% responsibility for where they are and where they’re going, kill it.
100% responsibility is a good thing. Accepting responsibility puts you in control. Think this through with me for a minute. If you accept full responsibility for where you are and where you’re going, you’re in control. You have the power to make changes and make it happen. Make sense?
You Can Make Excuses or You Can Make It Happen
My kids used to mock me for replying to their complaints and excuses with “Make it happen.” However, somewhere along the line, the complaints stopped and they started making it happen.
While all of my attorney clients share their stories of how they got to where they are, there’s a difference between those who are giving background and those who are blaming others while attempting to put themselves in good light. I no longer accept clients who blame others – why? Because, without taking 100% responsibility, they will fail – and they’re PITAs to deal with.
It’s time for self-examination. Are you blaming anything or anyone other than yourself for where you are in your life, career, or entrepreneurial venture? If so, focus on letting it go. It’s time for you to take full responsibility and make it happen.
You got this!
