We tend to berate ourselves for our mistakes. We “gap out,” looking ahead at the gap between where we are now and what we have yet to accomplish. Past achievements feels humdrum, no big deal.
Can you relate?
This assimilation is part of the human condition. We’re so used to our own success and that of those around us, we forget what a big deal it is to achieve what we’ve achieved.
I get it, but, what you’ve accomplished in a very big deal – and those mistakes? Also part of the human condition – and part of your learning which brought you to who and where you are right now.
Breakthrough to Success
Here are 4 ways to boost your perspective, appreciate all you’ve accomplished, and propel yourself forward. Pick whichever resonates with you. You’ll love the results.
1. Make a list of 100 successes you’ve had over your lifetime. These can be big things like surviving law school. They can also be super granular like I paid off my first car, I improved my credit rating, or I graduated from the first grade without biting anyone.
2. Block off your life in 3 equal chunks. As an example, I’ll show you my chunks: ages 0 to 16, 17 to 34, 35 to 52. Then, for each of your own chunks, jot down 3 successes. Lastly, list 3 successes you’d like to have in the next 5 years.
3. Look in the mirror and say your name. Then, appreciate yourself (aloud) for your achievements, successes, risks taken, disciplines kept, or temptations overcome. Say, “I love you” to yourself.” Take it all in, remembering to breathe. Do this nightly before bed. (This will feel silly at first, but rest assured building your mindset is an essential part of becoming the person who owns a million dollar law firm.)
4. Keep a success journal. Each night before bed, you jot down your successes for the day, little or big.
Success Acknowledgement Benefits
Recognizing your successes changes your perspective completely, building your confidence and self-esteem. The higher your confidence and self-esteem, the more likely you are to take risks, invest in yourself, prosper – reaching those BHAG “big hairy audacious” goals you have.
You got this. !! I believe in you. 🙂
P.S. If you’re nodding yes, if you’re ready to go from pain to gain, if you have the vision of building a million-dollar+ law firm but don’t know how to get there, let’s chat about where you are and where you want to go. Set up your Breakthrough Strategy Session here.
