Not only does attorney Jane Williams protect families in both Kansas and Missouri through her estate planning and elder law practice, she also dedicates her legal expertise and advice to those who cannot afford legal services. Access to justice is a serious problem in the United States. Many families have no means to protect their legal rights and families because they are priced out or suffer other vulnerabilities. Unfortunately, there are those who try to take advantage.
Every month of every year, Jane Williams steps up to the plate three times over.
Kansas City Workers’ Justice Clinic
- Local residents who participate in the Kansas City Workers’ Justice Clinic are the beneficiaries of her good works. Every third Monday from 5pm to 8pm CT, volunteer attorneys, including Jane, meet with individuals who need help getting paid by people for whom they’ve completed work and are intentionally not paying them. Examples of services provided include: demand letters, small claims court petitions, claims to Kansas Department of Labor or the US Department of Labor, and calling employers.
~If you’re an attorney and are interested in helping, volunteers are needed. You can find out more about this 501(c)(3) here: http://www.kcwjc.org/ If you live out of the area, contact a clinic near you.
~If you need help getting paid, show up to El Centro at 650 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kansas 66101 the third Monday of the month. You are welcome there. Documentation will not be requested.
Kansas Legal Aid Elder Hotline
- Attorney Jane Williams also provides helpful information to those who call the Kansas Legal Aid Elder Hotline. Participants are age 55 or older who seek help from Legal Aid. Volunteer attorneys like Jane answer law-related questions such as how to get an adult child to move out of the house, how to evict a non-paying tenant, how to file a small claim petition,, and how to protect Social Security payments. The problems are very personal and participants don’t know what to do next.
~If you’re an attorney, the Kansas Legal Aid Elder Hotline needs additional volunteers. The commitment is 3.5 hours per month and you take hotline calls at your own desk one morning or afternoon a month. If you’re not local, check with your local Legal Aid to find the best volunteer opportunity for you.
~If you’re age 55 or older, can’t afford legal services, and have a question, reach out to Kansas Legal Aid at 1-800-723-6953. Kansas Legal Services, a statewide non-profit corporation, is devoted to helping low income Kansans meet their basic needs through the provision of important legal and mediation services. There’s lots more information here. If you live in another state, your local Legal Aid office can connect you with help.

~If you’re an attorney in Western Missouri here’s where to reach out to become part of VAP. If you’re in another geographic area, reach out to your local Legal Aid.
~If you are unable to afford legal representation, reach out to Western Missouri Legal Aid or the Legal Aid organization in your community. Legal Aid of Western Missouri provides assistance to our low-income and elderly neighbors in civil (non-criminal) matters. Qualifying for help may be based on income and assets of all people living in your home. It is also based on the type of legal problem you have.
